Curriculum

The focus of Eigth Grade Social Studies is United States History and Geography.  We cover a broad range of topics from current events, politics, and history of the United States from the Civil War to the present.  We concentrate on covering strands 1, 3 and 5 in the New York State Learning Standards for Social Studies. As of the 2014-15 school year I will be adopting the common core standards for social studies in New York State.

Grading Criteria

Evaluating students in 8th grade Social Studies will be based on the following:

50%  Average of tests and quarterly projects

25%  Average of Quiz grades

25%  Homework and Classwork (graded based on assignments done in class)

Grades in the Center Moriches Middle School are numerical

Homework policy

Homework is given a few times per week.  If you are absent or not in class due to band, guidance, late to school etc. you are responsible to check the homework board to get the assignment. Homework must be turned in the day it is due. Homework will only be collected one day late, or the day after the student returns to school.

  • Extra Credit is always available via the Extra Credit Page of the website.

Quarterly Project and Writing Assignments

Each marking period a project will be assigned.  If research is to be done, class time may be used to help prepare.  Most of the project work should be done at home.  The value of the quarterly project is the same as a Unit test.
